WebFrits Thaulow was the brother-in-law of Paul Gauguin, a friend of Claude Monet, and the central figure in the emergence of a Norwegian school of Impressionist landscape painting in the 1880s. This image is one of a series of winter views which Thaulow produced of factories on the Akerselven River in Oslo. WebFrits Thaulow was influenced by Norwegian Romanticist painter Hans Gude. Between 1873 and 1875, Frits studied under Hans Gude in Germany, developing and perfecting his techniques and methods. Gude’s application of color and naturalism in his artworks is a method Frits adopted in painting the landscapes for which he is renowned.

Thaulow was one of the earliest artists to paint in Skagen in the north of Jutland, soon to become famous for its Skagen Painters. He arrived there in 1879 with his friend Christian Krohg, who persuaded him to spend the summer and autumn there. They arrived from Norway in Thaulow's little boat.
